Church of St. Philip and St. James
Church of St. Philip and St. James

The Church of St. Philip and St. James serves the area around Bath Road and The Park. As the village of Leckhampton grew, the church of St. Peter, the main church of Leckhampton, situated in the heart of Leckhampton village, was unable to cope with the increasing congregation and another church was needed. Built on the border of Leckhampton and Cheltenham parishes, St. Philip and St. James was consecrated on 1 May 1840 as a daughter church of St. Peter's.

In 1869, St. Philip and St. James was granted separate parish status, and the first Vicar was appointed in May of that year. In the 1880s the church was enlarged by the architect John Middleton and gained its present appearance apart from its now so characteristic "saddleback" tower, which was added in 1903. In 1963 a Columbarium was built in the crypt where ashes of the departed can rest, the first of its kind in the United Kingdom.

The church has a thriving community. Its Toddler's Group meets every Friday morning during the term time. It aslo has a choir, which has recently recorded a CD, and a music group, which practices once a month.
