| Prince of Wales Stadium |
The Prince of Wales Stadium opened in 1981. To celebrate the new facility a floodlit cricket match between Gloucestershire and Australia took place on 2nd September 1981, with a guest appearance by Denis Lillee. Australians won the toss and decided to field. To the delight of the specators, Gloucestershire won by 72 runs.
The stadium is home to Cheltenham Rugby Football Club, so-called Cheltenham Tigers, established in 1889. When they first moved there, they played their first game of the season against the world famous Harlequins to celebrate the occasion.
The running track was reopened on 2nd October 1999 by the Mayor of Cheltenham and Allison Curbishley, who won a Silver Medal in Commonwealth Games in 1998 and is a current Scottish 400m record holder. The track surface had been resurfaced with Polytan PUR at a cost of £185,000. Thanks to donations of £1,800, the stadium has its own Seiko electronic timing equipment. It is home to Cheltenham & County Harriers.
