Balcarras School was opened to pupils on 2 September 1986 and occupied the site previously known as Charlton Kings County Secondary School. The school was named after a local place name - a farmhouse of this name was in existence in Charlton Kings as late as 1557, presumably named after a stately home in Fife, Scotland.
It has been a comprehensive school, initially for 11-16 year olds since 1986. In 1996 approval was given to open a 6th Form and in 1998 it became a Technology College.
Balcarras School has a wide range of facilities: Computer rooms, 8 science laboratories, Art studios, Ceramics room, Design & Technology centre, Music suite and Assembly Hall with stage and lighting, and a state of the arts Library Resource Centre.
It has also excellent sports facilities : Sports Hall, Gymnasium, Playing fields, 7 tennis courts, 4 cricket nets, an artificial wicket, a superb new pavilion and astro turf pitch.
