Meetings of the full council are held at regular intervals of about two months throughout the year. The executive body of the council is the Cabinet, which meets more frequently. Apart from the Cabinet, there are also Overview and Scrutiny committees. The role of Overview and Scrutiny is to hold the executive (the Cabinet) to account before and after decisions are made. The five scrutiny committees in place are:

-    Corporate Performance and Resorces
-    Adult Services and Libraries
-    Children and Young People
-    Environment and Community
-    Health
