Pittville Lawn, as its original name The Central Carriage Drive suggests, forms the heart of the 19th century Pittville Estate. It stretches from the entrance of the Pittville Estate, at the top of Winchcombe Street where the Pittville Park gates dating back to 1830 can be found, to the Pittville Lake. It presents a continuous array of fine houses built between 1826 and 1842. Some of the early houses were built by the architect John Forbes, who also created Pittville Pump Room.
Facing the Long Garden, part of the original walks, rides and gardens of the Pittville Spa, a stretch of parkland in front of the houses, the layout of Pittville Lawn allowed its wealthy residents to built villas in whatever style they wished, unlike the houses in the terraces elsewhere in Pittville, the style of which was strictly controlled. You can find here a variety of styles - some buildings are terraces with large Ionic columns and matching ironwork, others are grand villas, of which the most famous one is Dorset Villa, one of the most extravagant Greek Revival houses, once home of the Whinyates, one of the town’s leading military families. Malden Court is built in gothic Revival style.
