| Holy Trinity Church |
Holy Trinity Church in Portland Street was the first new church to be built in Cheltenham since medieval times. It was erected in 1823, at a cost of £10,000. The first minister was Francis Close, familiar in Cheltenham as the founder of Cheltenham College and St Paul's College, which is now part of the University of Gloucestershire. The Church opened with an address from the famous Rev Charles Simeon.
The building was designed by George Allen Underwood, who also built Montpellier Spa and the Masonic Hall. In its interior most of the available wall space is dedicated to memorials of retired civil servants or Army Officer who served in India. The church was built on the ‘proprietary system’ – the money was raised by the sale of shares. Shareholders were entitled to use a pew, whereas non-shareholders had to pay to attend the service.
Since 1994 the church has had a major refurbishment project, where pews have been replaced with chairs, carpet aided, and the décor changed to enable greater flexibility in the building's use.
