Cheltenham Film Society was established in 1945 and the first screening in Daffodil Cinema (now a restaurant) was attended by 450 viewers, with membership rocketing to 1,100, making it the 5th largest film society in the UK. Today, the society has over 300 members and its president is producer Sir David Puttnam. The films shown in Dean Close School's Bacon Theatre on 35mm or DVD are selected to showcase works of excellent directors from all over the world. Most of the films are in foreign languages (always shown with English subtitles), but English spoken films are on schedule as well. The films are shown on twelve Tuesday evenings from Autumn to Spring.
