My Grandmother, Alice Taylor - 4/4/1887 - may have been born in Cheltenham. Her father Edward owned The Apple Tree Inn in the St. Paul's area, her mother was also called Alice. She had a younger sister Kate and a brother Edward. Alice married Mr. James Bone in 1917, he served as a stretcher bearer in the First World War, being invalided out after a bullet wound to his leg. They moved at some stage to Malvern, Worcs. when James was transferred to Frederick Wrights' newsagents shop from the Cheltenham branch.
Sadly, in 1932 at the age of 45 years with 3 Children, Alec aged 16, Dorothea aged 12 and Arthur (my father) aged 8 years - Alice was committed to Powick Mental Institution where she remained until she died on 27th June 1971 at the age of 84 years. She had spent 23 days, 8 months and 38 years at Powick Hospital during a period when she was quietly forgotton.
It appears between 1928 -1932 she may have been resident at a Mental Institution in Cheltenham. What caused her illness is uncertain, however she was a grammar school girl, able to play piano and helped her parents at the Apple Tree Inn. Her sister Kate, became Kate Wakefield who was heavily involved in Committee and Community work all her life in Cheltenham.
When living at The Apple Tree, another family of Taylor's were involved in the Brewing Industry in St.Pauls and it will be interesting to research any connection with the new Brewery complex and the founder brewer John Gardener.
