May Waddy was born in Cheltenham in the 1890s, her Father was Herbert Waddy, the General Manager of Gloucester/Sharpness Docks. May married a Mr Louis Blackmore and had 2 daughters and 1 son. Unfortunately the marriage did not last and May moved to Bristol (they did not divorce, Louis died a few years after May left). May went to live with an Aunty who had instructions to ensure May behaved, they lived in the Southville area of Bristol.
May had attended Cheltenham Ladies College and was well educated, being able to quote Shakespeare's sonnets most eloquently, so it seems rather strange that she went to work at Robertsons Jam Factory in Bristol employed as a factory worker. May liked to drink, Sherry apparently was her tipple and she frequented the Shakespeare in Princess Street, Bristol.
Here she met my Grandfather who enjoyed a glass of cider. My Grandfather was a widower and they married, May states to be a Potato Fryer, so she may have been working at the Smiths Crisps Factory, Brislington, Bristol, where her Sister in Law was a supervisor. May was a Roman Catholic and after my Grandfather died, May finally moved to St. Josephs Home in Cotham, Bristol. She died in 1971.
I am interested to know if any one can give any information on her Father, being the General Manager, there must be records of him, and possibly a photograph. I am told her 2 daughters became nuns and her son worked for the BBC in Bristol. 1911 Census shows the Waddy Family living at Evesham Lodge, Cheltenham - can any one advise information on this dwelling?
