Family History Stories

When researching your family history you will find out many fascinating stories about your ancestors. You might discover stories of passion, murder, heroism, poverty and wealth, but one thing you’ll find on this journey for certain is who you are and what you’re made of. Some stories of our ancestors are as relevant today as they were then. Share your family stories with others and tell your ancestors' tales so their legacy is not forgotten.

Also, if you lived in Cheltenham and would like to share your memories of the days gone please send us your story.

I would like to share a story of my ancestors, including my great great great uncle Charles Ball. He was born in 1833 in Cromwell Common, Gloucestershire and christened in Wotton-under-Edge 12 June 1833.

Joseph Cooper Straford (about 1795 - 1859) was my wife's first cousin four times removed. He was a solicitor in Cheltenham and the Clerk to Cheltenham Magistrates.

May Waddy, daughter of Herbert Waddy, the General Manager of Gloucester / Sharpness Docks, was educated in Cheltenham Ladies College, but rather strangely went to work at Robertsons Jam Factory in Bristol, where she met my grandfather.

Alice Elizabeth Taylor, daughter of Edward Taylor, the owner of The Apple Tree Inn in St. Paul's, spent the later years of her life in Powick Mental Institution, but what caused her illness is uncertain.

In her family history search Bridget, who as a child moved to Cheltenham from London, discovered that in a strange coincidence her grandmother Georgina Bannister Gardner was actually born in Cheltenham.
