LOOK AND FEEL
Family Tree Maker 2006 is one of the simpler genealogy software perhaps because it is now slightly old. Its simplicity however offers unprecedented ease of use.The default family view is clear with all the important facts of all individuals in the family (including children) on view in large writing. By clicking on the parents first names you get to the next generation, by clicking on an arrow next to a child you get the child into the main view. However, when you have lots of children attached to an individual you have to scroll down. Pedigree view then allows you to view several generations in a chart. To quickly find the individual you need you have alphabetical index.

Clicking on the Edit button next to the individual brings up the Edit Individual screen where you can add facts about the individual's life. You can only append photos to each individual, not to a particular event or the whole family as you can in Rootsmagic or Legacy, but you can attach images of original documents directly to sources.
IMPORT CAPABILITIES
Family Tree Maker's GEDCOM import isn't perfect. The order of children and spouses aren't always preserved in the transfer, and data in unrecognized tags may be misplaced or dropped altogether.

Family Tree Maker 2006 has outstanding publishing features. It has a range of customizable charts. The genealogy report generated is well laid out as it goes through all the descendants. Web Merge makes it easy to add records and images from Ancestry.com to any individual in your file. You can open and work with two family files simultaneously, including cut and paste (no drag and drop), however, both run as a separate instance of Family Tree Maker.
SHARING YOUR WORK
Family Tree Maker 2006 doen't support output to HTML so you can't create web pages of your research. To share your research you have to publish pages to Family Tree Maker website. You can however back up family files to CD or Internet for convenient data storage and retrieval. (Internet backup is free only for the first three months.
